The use of natural elements in interior spaces has been desirable throughout history. Natural materials such as stone, grass, and wood create texture and interest as each piece is a true original. Wood for example, can be decorative, functional, warming, and structural. In one form or another, natural materials appeal to every style of interior design. No man made object can rival the true beauty of an object found in nature.

Wide, open light filled spaces are what comes to mind when envisioning a contemporary interior. Bright neutral walls and highly reflective surfaces are like a blank canvas. Metallic accents or accents that resemble metal such as mirrors add interest by reflecting light and color. Metals can be seen as the jewelry of the interior design.

Incorporating fabrics and textures that resemble materials found in nature help to create a comfortable earthy interior. Convey an earthy concept by using objects and surfaces made of natural materials such as ceramics, stone, and clay. The use of fresh fabric patterns and textures create interest where interiors may be thought of as bland or monochromatic. The earth tone color palette includes a more interesting range than formerly thought. From yellows, to reds, to blues in addition to the colors that traditionally come to mind. Earth tone interiors, when designed well, will be restful and welcoming with a timeless sense of sophistication.

Fresh colors, light blues and greens, evoke a relaxing sense of calm. Like the colors of water, these lovely colors give the sense of renewal and rebirth. These cool colors can be integrated into any style of decor. Balancing these lighter colors with darker neutrals will keep the space from looking bland. In addition to color, a cool, fresh interior concept can be conveyed in other ways. The use of translucent materials such as glass or other reflective surfaces are a great way to give the sense of water.

Bright, lively colors such as oranges and reds are used to add character and interest to an interior. As you might expect, seeing these colors evoke emotions of passion and warmth. Spaces with “pops of color”, can be really fun, but be careful not to over-do it. For those that are not afraid of color, painting the walls in a warm color can be a positive mood changing experience. For those who like to play it safe, a few bold colored accents can add personality to any space.
